How to use “Remove Background”
- Add one or more photos of people, products, animals or objects (iPhone HEIC files work too).
- Pick the new background: transparent, a color, the photo itself blurred or an image of yours.
- Click “Remove background”. The AI model is downloaded when you open this page (first time only) and stays stored in your browser.
- If something did not come out right, paint over the result with “Restore” or “Erase”, click “Apply touch-ups” and download.
An AI model that runs on your device
The cutout is made by ISNet, a segmentation neural network trained to separate the main subject from the background, which runs inside your browser: on the graphics card (WebGPU) when available and, if not, on the processor. The photo is analyzed at 1024 × 1024 px and the resulting mask is applied to the image at its original resolution, with soft edges. Behind the subject you can leave transparency, a plain color, the photo itself blurred (a portrait effect) or an image of yours fitted to cover the background. If the model leaves out part of the subject or keeps a bit of background, the touch-up brush fixes the mask by hand, and touch-ups are applied without running the photo through the AI again: each photo’s mask is kept while the page is open. The model is downloaded only once (about 44 MB) and your photos never leave your computer.

Frequently asked questions
Why does it take longer the first time?
Because the browser downloads the AI model, about 44 MB, and stores it. From then on it loads from your device and each photo takes a few seconds, less with a WebGPU-capable graphics card.
Which format should I choose to keep transparency?
PNG if you will keep editing the image or want edges with no loss at all; WebP if it is for a website, since it is much lighter. JPG has no transparency: the background is filled with the color you choose, white by default.
What if the cutout does not come out right?
Paint over the result: “Restore” brings back parts of the subject that were removed and “Erase” removes leftover background. When you click “Apply touch-ups”, the photo is recomposed in a moment, without going through the AI again. If the subject is small, cropping the photo first with “Crop Image” also helps.
How do I add a different background or a portrait blur?
Under “New background”, pick “Color” for a plain background, “Blurred” to keep the photo itself blurred behind the subject or “Image” to place one of yours, fitted to cover the whole background.
Does it work for online store product photos?
Yes: pick the “Color” background in white (#FFFFFF) to get the uniform white background Amazon and most marketplaces require, or keep it transparent in PNG to place the product on another design.
