- Add one or more AVIF files (the ones you save from websites that use this format).

- Adjust the JPG quality if you like and click the convert button.
- Download each converted image or all of them at once in a ZIP.
What AVIF is and why it will not open
AVIF is an image format based on the AV1 video codec: at the same quality it is considerably smaller than a JPG, which is why more and more websites serve their photos as AVIF. The trouble starts when you save them: older versions of Windows, many image editors and some messaging apps cannot open it. The conversion is done by your browser’s own decoder, with nothing extra to download. Transparent areas are kept in PNG and filled with the background color you choose in JPG. If the AVIF is animated, only its first frame is saved.
Are my files uploaded?
No. ShiftAny Images processes your images directly on your device: this tool runs in your browser and never sends your files to any server.
Frequently asked questions
Is quality lost going from AVIF to JPG?
A little, as with any JPG: at quality 85 or above it is invisible to the naked eye. If you will keep editing the image or need transparency, choose PNG, which stores every pixel without loss.
Why is the JPG bigger than the AVIF?
Because AVIF compresses much better: the same image commonly takes twice the space or more as a JPG, and considerably more as a PNG. That is the price of a file any program can open.
Can my browser convert AVIF?
If it is up to date, yes: Chrome, Edge and Firefox have read it for years, and Safari since version 16. If yours does not support it, the tool will tell you it cannot read the file.
